DAVIS COUNTY — Three members of the Utah State Board of Education, the organization in which Kim Burningham serves as Chairman, have reinforced their full support for Referendum 1, also known as the school voucher bill.

Burningham, who is from Bountiful, has played an active part in the anti-voucher organization “Utahns for Public Schools,” while other members of the State Board of Education, who are from all over Utah, have expressed great support for the voucher program. The State Board of Education includes 15 members who are either in favor of or against vouchers.

“We are not about maintaining the system, we are about serving the needs of students,” said Board Member Richard Moss. “We want Utah children to be inspired by their opportunities.”

The passing or failing of Referendum 1 will be the determining factor in whether or not public money to attend private school will be provided to families of all income levels.

“We value education, that’s why our tax dollars are allocated to education,” said Board Member Mark Cluff. “The result we desire is educated children. We shouldn’t discriminate against private schools.”

Bill Colbert of Draper said voting ‘Yes’ on Referendum 1 will improve public education through reduced class sizes and cost savings.

“Low- and middle-income families will particularly benefit through increased educational opportunities that are not available today,” he said.

The date of the vote determining whether or not vouchers will pass will be Nov. 6. Those interested or concerned can visit the Utah State Legislature’s Web site at www.le.
