Since the beginning of recorded time, good people have had periodic attacks of stupidity by standing for the wrong thing. In fact, being duped or fooled is a common human flaw to which all are vulnerable. It doesn’t take many turns at “getting burned” after following the wrong leader or wrong idea to learn the tremendous value of questioning, examining and re-evaluating a decision or position. Everybody learns quite early in life that it is always smart to avoid reckless thought and action. When an issue is so complex that seeing through to the truth becomes clouded and difficult, the task of making wise choices can become daunting at best. That is why spending a few minutes to take inventory of where other good thinkers stand on an issue can be extremely useful. It helps the individual see aspects, angles and questions he or she otherwise might not have considered. It helps a person probe a little more deeply to discover just where his or her thinking might have stumbled into a lapse of thoughtlessness. A person who changes his or her mind after gaining more education is a living testimony to the value of looking harder, thinking outside the box and being smarter. For most conservatives it would be an insane and treasonous betrayal of sound thinking and freedom-based principles to align their thinking with the National Democratic Party, the ACLU, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Michael Moore, Atheists United or Hillary Clinton. For most liberal thinkers it would be a foolish abandonment of their effort to transform the United States into a socialistic welfare state to align their thinking with George W. Bush, Mitt Romney, Rudy Giuliani, the Heritage Foundation, American Family Association, Traditional Values Coalition, National Right to Life, Milton Friedman, the All Children Matter organization or the Christian Coalition. The burning question today is this: among which of the above named groups and individuals do you find yourself linking arms with when it comes to current issues forthcoming in this next election? If you live in Utah, chances are you strongly align yourself with the conservatives. You most likely respect these people for their studious skills in analytical thinking and their ability to see through the confusion and rhetoric of any particular issue. You probably admire these people for how they can base their decisions on a good understanding of core principles. And this highlights a most curious disappointment: why do so many Utah voters throw away their intellectual file leaders and instead stand up with the National Democratic Party, the ACLU, Al Gore, Nancy Pelosi, Jesse Jackson, Michael Moore, Atheists United and Hillary Clinton—all of whom do not want Utah to have school vouchers?
