In support of National School Choice Week, Governor Gary R. Herbert and Parents for Choice in Education join together in declaring January 23-29 as School Choice Week in Utah. To signify the great importance of recognizing the need for choice in education, Governor Herbert has signed a Declaration Commemorating Utah School Choice Week. By signing this declaration, Utah joins the ranks of at least 12 other states whose Governors have declared School Choice Week; thereby, issuing a call for observance to the attention of all citizens.
As the declaration declares, "all children in Utah should have the right to the highest-quality schools possible; and citizens across Utah agree that improving the quality of education in Utah and expanding access to highly effective schools should be an issue of importance to our state's leaders."
Governor Gary R. Herbert issued an official statement for the Declaration's release saying, "Utah is fortunate to boast a range of options, both public and private, to educate our children. That diversity of resources, coupled with the diversity of the needs of children, is critical if we are to prepare our children to compete in a global marketplace and become all they are destined to be."
Both Governor Herbert and Parents for Choice in Education have been longtime advocates for empowering parents with the best education options to meet the individual needs of their children. "Utah has a history of being at the forefront of school choice policy," states PCE Board Chair, Robyn Bagley. "Utah students have seen an increase in access to school choice options, both public and private, but more quality options are needed to meet the diverse characteristics of our state's children." Preparing all students for the jobs and careers of this 21st century economy is paramount to Utah's future.
